“ I've pretty much been to all of the bigger museums around here (LACMA, both Gettys etc.) I'm interested in going to some of the lesser known places, something like the Museum of Jurassic Technology but not as weird and smelly. ”

Beautiful gardens, especially at this time of the year before it gets too hot. Also some interesting and famous art.

Alan:
The gardens and art are great, but what I really like is that they have one of the coolest old/rare book collections anywhere. If you've seen an image of the Canterbury Tales, it was probably taken at the Huntington. They also have a Gutenberg Bible, handwritten notes by Newton, Edison, Darwin, Bacon, etc. and an original Audubon painting. Neat stuff!

It's kinda pricey, but they have a Free Day once per month, and admission that day is free if you get tickets in advance (get tickets early; they're already sold out for the Free Day in May, and it's only early April).

I hadn't heard of this place until a few months ago, but it was very good. Rather than having a little bit of everything, it concentrates on the stuff that Norton Simon liked. Thankfully, he had really good taste. A bunch of Asian sculpture and bas reliefs on the lower floor, some impressionist paintings, and a bunch of romantic paintings (from the Romanticism Movement; not necessarily lovey-dovey) on the main floor. Abstract sculptures out in the back gardens.
It's sort of a natural history museum, where they dig up skeletons from the Ice Age that got stuck in the tar pits. Interesting stuff, if you're into that sort of thing. See http://raccoonandlobster.com/2009/12/... for some of the larger attractions.

This is a great museum. It was one of my kids favorites when they were young.

I know it's not in SM, but if you're ever up in Vegas, this place is so much fun. You can play all sorts of crazy-old games for a quarter, and they have some more modern ones (which cost a bunch more).

It's free (though certain movies/shows cost money), and has some neat stuff inside. On clear days, you can see live images of the sun (including a big solar flare coming out of the side, last time I was there). It has the usual observatory displays about tides and meteors and stuff as well. At night, they let the general public look through one of the giant telescopes on the roof (I still haven't done this, but I've been meaning to go back after dark and try it). and if you manage to get bored, it's surrounded by beautiful Griffith Park.
i've been wanting to go here, which's why i posted^^

I haven't actually been here, but it's the kind of quirky museum I'd like to see some time.

I suggest heading down to Culver City. Washington Boulevard has got a slew of privately owned galleries. If you're looking for more contemporary artwork or local artists, that's a great place to start. I love LeBasse Projects. They showcase a lot of the artists that I really love. Thinkspace gallery also recently moved down there from their Silverlake location. I haven't been to the new space yet, but they're having an opening on May 7th for a couple of artists that I follow online. :)
